Dennis Moran, ECMC Principal, has over 40 years of diverse experience with energy systems. The first part of his career focused on developing and commercializing advanced energy conversion systems. Recent efforts have focused on using new technologies and other tools to help consumers reduce energy costs, improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. His experience includes:
Efficiency Program Development and Implementation
Developed and implemented an energy cost management strategy for a group of 220 hotels in Marriott’s Eastern Region. Efforts included: communicating strategy and results to all parties, identifying opportunities, supporting project implementation of cost-savings measures, as well as negotiating and managing regional electricity and natural gas contracts.
Managed utility data analysis and reporting program Marriott Americas. These efforts included reporting on cost & usage trends, determining causes of cost anomalies, calculating recommended efficiency improvement goals for each property and tracking performance against these goals.
Prepared strategic plan for Marriott’s response to 2000/2001 energy market turmoil.
Co-directed an effort to reestablish an energy efficiency services business in the DC region. These efforts focused on the federal government, health care, education, and office markets.
Served as the Director of the Mid-Atlantic CHP Application Center at the University of Maryland. This program supported efforts to increase use of combined heat and power to improve energy efficiency in industrial and commercial facilities.
Energy Supply Contracting
Following Marriott’s global reorganization in 2010, Mr. Moran’s energy contracting responsibility expanded from the Eastern Region to all facilities in the Americas. Managed regional competitions and individual negotiations of electricity, natural gas and propane contracts covering around 500 facilities and annual contract spend of $80 – 90 MM.
Joined Marriott International in 1998 as Director of Energy & Engineering Equipment Contracting. Responsible for developing structure of national energy contracting program and managing regional competitions.
As Director of Power Generation, Cogeneration and Gas Cooling at the American Gas Association, worked with natural gas utilities to help them understand and prepare for electric industry restructuring and the rising importance of third-party energy suppliers.
Energy Technology Development & Utilization
While serving as Director of Cogeneration and Gas Cooling at the American Gas Association, worked with suppliers and utilities to identify target markets and develop promotion approaches tailored to those markets.
Provided consulting support to government and industrial clients on marketing and potential impact of advanced energy technologies. These efforts focused primarily on renewable energy systems, cogeneration and coal gasification.
Prepared industry characterizations for utilities to identify opportunities and helping them develop targeted DSM programs.
Served as a Design and Project Engineer with Westinghouse working on the development of coal gasification for power generation and synthetic fuels production; nuclear power plants; solar energy systems; coal-bed methane extraction; spent nuclear fuel storage; and various other emerging energy technologies.
